Fluency

When students can read fluently their attention can be dedicated to comprehending and understanding the text.  The best way to increase reading fluency is by practicing reading often.  Fluency includes the speed at which a student reads and also their expression and tone.  Re-reading a favorite or familiar text repeatedly allows children to increase their automatic  word recognition of the words in the text and practice using expression.

One technique is to video or audio record your child reading aloud and then have them watch and/or listen to the recording.  Kids love to hear their own voice and see themselves on the screen, so there is no need for a fancy app to motivate kids to practice their fluency.

After they watch or listen to themselves read they can use the rubric below to rate themselves.

Once the child determines what should be improved, he or she can re-read the same passage and check for improvement.
